Meet Ernestine

Workforce Challenge

Ernestine and her siblings were raised in an abusive home. They eventually moved to to their grandmother's home which provided a supportive and nurturing environment. While in school, Ernestine was having trouble passing her math classes and so she enrolled in the WIA Youth Program at Pike Peak Community College (PPCC) to access assistance.(

Workforce Solution

The program helped with her tuition at PPCC and provided tutoring to improve her math skills. The Workforce Center also helped Ernestine receive her Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. She participated in a Youth Opportunity Internship, CPR training, a community art project, and the Leadership for Life program. Ernestine has secured employment and it is through her desire to better herself and not give up on her dreams that she has become a successful young adult.

Ernestine was recently named 2014 Youth Participant of the Year. This award is given by the Pikes Peak Workforce Board to a Youth Program participant who has overcome barriers to education and employment through dedication and personal initiative in order to become a productive member of the workforce.
