Meet Venus

Workforce Challenge

Venus was a nineteen year old mother, addicted to drugs and living in a foster home after her two children had been taken away by social services.

Workforce Solution

Venus was introduced to the Workforce Investment Board Youth Program whose staff provided her with resources to overcome her drug problem, tools to enter the workforce and guidance on proper study habits for college. She learned how to create a resume, fill out job applications and what to expect at interviews.

Outcomes & Benefits

Venus now works as an attendant at a medical transportation company and has become a CPR Trainer. She is also learning to be a first responder.

In addition, Venus is enrolled in the nursing program at San Bernardino Valley College and aims to become a registered nurse, while also caring for her two children, ages 5 and 3.

“It’s very hard work and very much a balancing act but I love it and appreciate the opportunity more than anything. I feel so good about myself now and my family admires me for getting into this program and improving my prospects. Working full time enables me to provide for my children and help my mother with bills. I’m excited to make a career for myself as a registered nurse and provide for my family for the future.”
