Meet Katrina

Workforce Challenge

Katrina was laid off from her employer, a large telecommunications company, in June, 2012. She was a Senior Lead and had worked for this company for ten years. Katrina is married with a small child, and the loss of her income was devastating.

Workforce Solution

Katrina had a BS degree in Business Management, but found this degree was not making her marketable for suitable employment. She chose to use a Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) scholarship to obtain another BS degree in Accounting. Since the cost of obtaining this degree exceeded the allowable amount under the TAA program, center staff co-enrolled Katrina in the WIA Dislocated Worker program. This funded additional educational costs for Katrina.

Outcomes & Benefits

Katrina maintained excellent grades in school and graduated with her BS in Accounting in June, 2014, exactly two years after losing her previous job. She found immediate employment with a good firm as an accountant. With her new salary and bonuses, she will be making over 80% of her previous salary. Without the assistance of the TAA and WIA programs, Katrina would have been unable to achieve this success. She has mentioned numerous times how grateful she is for these programs.
