Meet Sonya

Workforce Challenge

Sonya graduated with a degree in Marketing and had been struggling to find employment. As a result, she had been receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) Basic Cash Assistance.

Workforce Solution

The Colorado Works program and the Work First program work in complimentary roles to help people find stable employment that allows them to become financially self sufficient and no longer need to TANF assistance.
The Outreach United Resource Center, Inc. (OUR Center) is a community-based agency which provides assistance to the community in the form of food, clothing banks, financial assistance for utilities, and housing referrals. Work First also partners with the OUR Center to provide internship opportunities for Work First clients. This collaboration benefits both agencies as the Work First clients are able to develop new skills to add to their resumes, and the OUR Center receives much needed assistance.

Outcomes & Benefits

Sonya began an internship with to the OUR Center team and was so well liked by both the staff and customers that when grant funds became available, the OUR Center created a position for her that she accepted. With stable employment, Sonya was then able to stop receiving TANF assistance.
