Workforce Challenge

Donna came to Greenville County Workforce Development for assistance after being laid off from her job of 26 years at a regional grocery store chain. In her job, she had started out at entry level and worked her way up to an Inventory Auditor. She knew the value of hard work, commitment & customer service. However, she was now unemployed, going through a divorce and was challenged with health concerns. She also had a daughter who was in her senior year of college.

Workforce Solution

Through the workforce center, Donna participated the WIA-funded Preferred Employer Training Program. She received her WorkKeys certificate and enrolled at Greenville Technical College in the Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (OMA) program. She also worked part time. Donna completed her OMA classes along with her externship in April 2014. Her daughter was her inspiration, support and even taught her good study skills.

Donna had several interviews but the opportunities were not aligning to her advantage. For example, one job possibility was far from her home and would require 70 miles round trip, which was unrealistic. Donna's WIA case manager worked with the center's Business Service Representative to match her with an employer and create a Work Experience opportunity for Donna. (A Work Experience subsidizes the employee's wage to allow the employee time to 'get up to speed' and gain work experience in a new field.) Donna interviewed with Vision Plus Eyecare of Greenville and was accepted.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completing the Work Experience, Donna was hired by Vision Plus full time with benefits. The employer stated they are elated to have Donna as an employee and that this has been an excellent opportunity for all involved. "Donna has the drive and initiative to learn the sophisticated, state of the art equipment," Vision Plus said. "Not everyone is a good fit for this technology, but Donna is!"
