Meet Miriam

Workforce Challenge

Miriam was an unemployed single mother with few workforce skills. She was living in a safe house with her child and was struggling. She wanted to start a career in the medical field but without employment she was unable to find or afford appropriate housing or provide for herself and her son.

Workforce Solution

Because Miriam did not have the skills to be successful, she was interviewed by a Workforce Coach and enrolled into the Workforce Investment Act program. Miriam was very focused and completed all requirements quickly. Miriam very much wanted to work in the medical field so her workforce coach partnered with Women in Transition program for training as a Nurse Assistant. After training was completed, the Workforce Coach assisted in placing Miriam in an on-the-job training position in a medical facility as a Call Center Receptionist and Appointment Scheduler.

Outcomes & Benefits

Miriam successfully completed her Call Center training and the employer was very happy with her abilities and her willingness to learn. Within less than a year at the medical facility Miriam was promoted to Medical Assistant, her dream job. She and her son have their own apartment now, and are living well. Miriam has also received her Permanent Residency card during this time and is very grateful for all the support offered by her Glenwood Springs Workforce Coach.
