RoyOMartin Plywood

Workforce Challenge

RoyOMartin Plywood is a treated lumber and plywood manufacturer with several locations in rural Louisiana. In the past, new hires and incumbent employees had struggled with transportation issues that meant they were late or absent from shifts, or were unable to continue their jobs. Additionally, the skills needed for the safe manufacture of plywood, while maintaining quality standards, required several months of hands-on training with no guarantees that the employee would stay on past the training period. RoyOMartin needed assistance with applicant screening and strategies to lower their training costs, minimize transportation barriers and reduce employee turn over.

Workforce Solution

The local Rapides Parish Workforce Investment Board LWIA#61 in collaboration with the Rapides Business & Career Solutions Center was able to enter into an On-The-Job (OJT) Contract with RoyOMartin, utilizing available funds to provide short term training. The WIB also assisted with recruitment and referral efforts by screening applicants and referring job seekers whose skills matched those needed by RoyOMartin.

The OJT gave employees the necessary skills and knowledge needed in order to function and perform the job-related activities associated with their description of work. In addition to the WIA Training dollars the WIB was also able to utilize monies received in an earmark project to fund a portion of the transportation costs for employees to ride a passenger bus to and from the rural worksite location. This was part of a regionalized effort.

Outcomes & Benefits

Over the past two years, RoyOMartin has employed 15 team members using OJT funding. Even better, employee retention is up and assistance is available for those who need transportation to the rural worksites.
