Workforce Challenge

Aneetra had worked in the furniture industry for over ten years. In that time, she had developed an outstanding work ethic and had steadily moved up from an Assembly Operator to Inspector and Lead Person in Clean Up. She was doing really well, making a decent living and was happy to stay in the furniture industry until it was time for her to retire. And then in November 2005, she was laid off when her plant closed. Aneetra was a single mother of two, and she was faced with starting over.

Workforce Solution

Aneetra came to DavidsonWorks knowing she wanted training in a more stable career. After she was assessed to determine her skills and interests, Aneetra checked into the Health Information Technology program at Davidson County Community College. That program proved to be a good fit for her and Aneetra liked the thought of a career in the medical field without direct patient contact. Aneetra entered classes in the Fall of 2006 and excelled; she made the Dean's List each semester and she was named a student Ambassador and a Junior Marshall. The hardest part of the two year program proved to be getting her children used to a new schedule and making a few sacrifices here and there. Aneetra graduated with honors in May 2008.

Outcomes & Benefits

Aneetra entered into a work experience sponsored by DavidsonWorks during her last semester of school and when she graduated, she was offered employment by both the work experience worksite and a local hospital. Aneetra weighed her options and chose the hospital because of growth opportunities there. Today, Aneetra has continued her education and earned a certification in Cancer Information Management and she still works at Moses Cone Hospital in a field in which she feels truly passionate.
