Workforce Challenge

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) wished to increase the number of military veterans on staff. However, their existing recruiting methods they were not attracting a sufficient number of veteran candidates.

Workforce Solution

The Jefferson County American Job Center (AJC) provided a detailed overview of the services available to employers, and showed the NREL staff how to create and maintain a profile on the State of Colorado’s employment website, Connecting Colorado, to help them fine-tune their applicant search. As NREL was now a more integrated part of the county workforce system, they were contacted immediately when the AJC was planning an Add-A-Veteran hiring event, tailored to only veterans and their spouses. Veterans invited to the hiring event go through a four day course to focus on their resumes, interviewing skills, and job readiness skills before attending.

Outcomes & Benefits

NREL immediately connected with a number of veterans and their staff discussed available positions and screened candidates before having them apply. “The preparedness and caliber of the participants at the recent Add-A-Veteran Academy was extraordinary," said Joy G. of NREL. "I look forward to a continued and productive partnership with the American Job Center.”
