Meet Maria

Workforce Challenge

Maria came into the Adams County Workforce & Business Center in July 2012. She was requesting tuition assistance to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a single mother with a child, Maria was working at a restaurant making about $36,000 per year. Towards the end of her first year of school, she was laid off and unemployment benefits became her sole means of income. Maria was determined to complete her training, but the financial struggles were becoming a barrier to finishing her education.

Workforce Solution

Maria received a Workforce Investment Act scholarship and she was very grateful for the tuition assistance received. Maria also learned about the Colorado Enhanced Approved Training Program through Workforce Investment Act staff and she received full payment since she had been in school. The Workforce Investment Act tuition assistance and the Colorado Enhanced Approved Training Program benefits helped her alleviate some of the financial burdens so she could focus on school.

Outcomes & Benefits

Maria graduated in May 2013 and she received her Registered Nurse license shortly thereafter. In October 2013, Maria was hired full time as a Registered Nurse and she is now able to support her son and herself. Maria's case is a perfect example of the impact that Workforce Investment Act can have on those individuals who are dislocated workers.
