Meet Susana

Workforce Challenge

Susana worked for Pasadena Unified School District in a specialized setting as the Pregnant and Parenting teen teacher. She was laid off in June 2011 after four years in the role. At the time, she had also been working with her neighbors to clean up her crime ridden neighborhood. Her goal was to create or obtain funding to develop a long term plan to improve her block, and go on to improve other local areas.

Workforce Solution

Susana met with Francisco Bon-Valenzuela, a case manager at the Hollywood WorkSource Center. She completed an assessment and was qualified for training that would help her meet her career goals. Susana researched a few schools and chose the Grant Writing Program at Loyola Marymount University. The Multi-Sector Partnership NEG funding paid for her training. She completed the one year program in just six months in March 2014.

Outcomes & Benefits

After completing training, Susana formed her own company, New Discoveries Productions, LLC. The company will create and produce educational and historical documentaries to motivate kids to preserve their neighborhoods. She will also be hiring another NEG participant through MCS/Hollywood Worksource's On the Job Training program.
