Workforce Challenge

Dean was self employed for 15 years providing computer repair services. Through the years as people became more self-sufficient with their own computers, there was less and less demand for his services. Dean's income declined. He began looking for better employment & soon realized that he did not have the required certifications or training needed in the IT industry. He worked jobs in the fast food industry where he was allowed to eat free the days that he worked, and he cared for his elderly parent.

Workforce Solution

Dean registered in the WIA program in September 2012 and enrolled in training to obtain an associates degree in Computer Technology. He never took any breaks in his studies and went straight through the summer in his training program, completing the degree in just one and a half years. During his training he received SNAP assistance. Unfortunately he was also involved in a car accident which impacted his ability to attend school. He went to Miracle Hill where he received help in getting another vehicle, eliminating this significant barrier.

Outcomes & Benefits

While he stated the financial challenges were very difficult, Dean was happy he stayed the course and achieved his AS in Computer Technology, earning a 4.0 GPA. He interviewed and was offered a position with Concentrix as a Tech Support Engineer. Dean now makes three times more than he made when he was self employed, and it's the first time ever in his life he has had health care benefits. He recently had his 90-day review and was informed that he is rated above average for a new employee. Congratulations on your accomplishments Dean!
