Meet Kim

Workforce Challenge

Kim* was laid off from her job as a groundskeeper with the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2009. After the layoff, she had difficulty finding employment. She had been at LAUSD for many years, and she did not have appropriate skills to land a new job.

Workforce Solution

A friend told Kim about the Housing Authority WorkSource Center and the National Emergency Grant program for people laid off from LAUSD and other employers. Pamela was interested obtaining training as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). At the Center, Kim researched the labor market information and learned how many job opportunities were available for CNAs. With NEG grant funds, Pamela enrolled into Technical College's CNA program. In this training, she was able to learn new skills to pave the way for a new career setting.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kim completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program with flying colors. She received her Restorative Nurse Assistant and Certified Nurse Assistant certificates. Soon after her completion of training, Kim received a job with Eisenhower Nursing and Convalescent Hospital in Pasadena, California. She is now making $9.50 per hour. Housing Authority WorkSource helped her obtain work attire and a bus pass to get her to and from her new job. She is happy to be back to work.
