Meet Richard

Workforce Challenge

Richard is a disabled Veteran who suffers from PTSD. Although he has undergone treatment, it still creates challenges for him in interviews and with everyday interaction with people. Richard also has an orthopedic disability that can affect his physical ability at times. He worked in building maintenance prior to going into the Army and again after discharge in 1992, but by 2010 Richard was receiving unemployment and struggling to get back into building maintenance work. He finally accepted retail sales work in 2011 but was not happy in that role.

Workforce Solution

Richard returned to the Leadville Workforce Center in June 2013. Staff provided assistance with updating his resume and help with completing online applications. They assisted him with searches for the type of position that did not require much customer interaction. He also wanted a position where he could work independently as he had strong work skills and ethics. Richard was referred to regional Veteran Representative and continued to work with Workforce staff on applications, interviews, and referrals. Many of the referrals were in the retail sector in stocking or warehousing.

Outcomes & Benefits

The Veteran Representative and Leadville staff members successfully coordinated efforts to assist Richard. Richard accepted a position as a night shift worker in the meat department of a large grocery store in January 2014. The wage is satisfactory; the employer provides benefits; and he has the ability to work independently without continuous customer interaction. Richard is very happy with the job and the store is happy with his work.
