Meet Craig

Workforce Challenge

Craig came into the Wichita Workforce Center in July 2012 to get assistance with finding a new job. He had been laid off from his full-time position in aerospace manufacturing in April 2012 after almost five years of employment. At the time of the layoff, he was earning over $19 per hour. At the Center, Craig learned that he eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) benefits due to industry decline in the area.

Workforce Solution

Craig met with his Case Manager and enrolled in TAA in July 2012. Craig received a waiver that allowed him to delay an immediate entry into job training, since he really wanted to continue searching for job and wanted to take his time to research a new career. Although Craig had marketable skills, he remained unable to find and secure employment in his field. he was unable to find and secure employment in his field. Craig’s case manager encouraged him to move forward with researching alternative career options. Craign decided to pursue his commercial drivers license (CDL “A”), an option that would get him trained quickly and on the road to a new job. Craig enrolled at Wichita Truck Driving School using TAA benefits. After the 5-week training at Wichita Truck Driving School, Craig completed the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course Professional Truck Driver and was issued his Commercial Class “A” license in August 2013. TAA covered the entire cost of Craig’s training, including tuition, fees, books, DOT physical, drug screen and testing fees associated with his program.

Outcomes & Benefits

Craig obtained full-time employment with Hall Industrial Services as a Flatbed Truck Driver in November 2013, but shortly thereafter the employer requested that he relocate out of state. Since this wasn't possible, Craig found another job as a cabinet finisher at Global Engineering and Technology, Inc. in March 2014. This new position is not in the field of his training, but Craig continues to be employed, although at a lower rate than his previous jobs. For now, RTAA benefits are helping to supplement his income while he gears up to search for another job in transportation and trucking.
