Meet Phyllis

Workforce Challenge

With over 30 years teaching experience, Phyllis was devastated when she was laid off from her teaching position in Aspen. She returned to the Steamboat Springs area in early 2013. She had filed for, and received, unemployment benefits, including extended benefits. She continued her job search throughout that year, but there were no positions available within that school district that matched her requirements.

Workforce Solution

Phyllis went to the Steamboat Springs workforce center several days per week to conduct her job search. She used computer, fax, and copier and staff assisted with job search supplies and other available resources for job seekers. It was a difficult process for Phyllis because she had not been in this situation previously. She appreciated the support and encouragement she received from workforce staff and the resources available through workforce offices. Phyllis estimated that she saved a lot of money when she did not have much to begin with by using those resources.

Outcomes & Benefits

Phyllis' long job search was successful and she was offered a position in Cortez beginning in the fall 2013. She sent a long thank you note to Steamboat Springs staff for their support and resources during a very challenging time in her life. The note read: “It was very difficult to get my head and heart around searching for a job, but the employees, facilities, supplies, and quiet office space helped me immensely. Thank you for everything!!!”
