Workforce Challenge

In a down economy, more young workers have difficulty finding employment, especially seasonal employment during the summer months. Although workforce programs exist to help youth find summer employment, traditionally these jobs came from the already-struggling private sector. In Summer, 2009, Idaho took a different approach.

Workforce Solution

In just three short months, a $2.9 million stimulus grant to the Idaho Department of Labor was converted into eight-week summer jobs for 840 young Idahoans between the ages of 14 and 24.

These young people worked in science labs, museums, libraries, parks, schools and maintenance operations. Hundreds more fanned out across Idaho's forests and range lands, building and maintaining trails, helping crews reduce fuel loads, enhancing wildlife habitat and restoring damaged ecosystems. .

Outcomes & Benefits

Through this creative solution, Idaho's Youth Employment program received a boost from Recovery Act funds, allowing the state to complete important public projects such as repairs for the Bureau of Land Management, and allowing its young workers to learn new skills, receive a real-life work experience, and serve their state in the process.
