Meet Steve

Workforce Challenge

Steve is a 53 year old Coast Guard Veteran. Steve came to the Frisco Workforce Center in July 2013 because he was struggling to find work in his field of IT/Networking. He was hoping to find work in the Summit County area, but had been looking in areas as far away as Denver, without success. Steve was receiving Extended Unemployment Benefits, which were scheduled to end soon. Because he is a Veteran, Steve was referred to the Disabled Veteran’s Outreach Program (DVOP) representative who recommended that Steve get training for a professional certification to strengthen his competitiveness for the Internet Technology/Networking job market.

Workforce Solution

The Frisco DVOP enrolled Steve into the Veterans Workforce Investment Program (VWIP) and he was co-enrolled into the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program. The DVOP worked with a training provider for Cisco Certified Network Associate training and assisted in getting the vendor on the State Approved Training Provider list. The DVOP also negotiated with the trainer for a lower cost so that 100% tuition could be provided for Steve. After Steve completed the training, the DVOP worked with Steve on applying and interviewing for a few full or part time positions. Steve spent some time in a couple of positions which did not have competitive wages and were not allowing him to meet his full potential. The DVOP and WIA Counselor continued to work with Steve, and then the dream job happened.

Outcomes & Benefits

In October 2013, Steve applied for, interviewed, was offered, and accepted the job as the IT Manager at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. His wage of $60,000 per year plus benefits is competitive for the area and he credited the Frisco workforce staff with helping him attain his dream job with the training, motivation, and support that was offered to him.
