Workforce Challenge

Sandra was an unemployed, single mother of two who had been searching for a job for over a year when she first came in to the DavidsonWorks resource room. Though Sandra had a GED, the only work experience she had was as a cashier and sales clerk; and there was a lot of competition for those type of jobs.

Workforce Solution

JobsNOW was a statewide, short term training initiative offered by local workforce development boards and community colleges, the goal of which was to offer short term training in high- demand occupations. Sandra was excited to learn that there was going to be a Medical Billing and Coding JobsNOW training program offered at Davidson County Community College. After an assessment of her interests and aptitude, it was determined that training in that area would be a good fit for her career goals and interests. Sandra entered into the training program and obtained a Gold level Career Readiness Certification in addition to the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist credential earned through the training program.

Outcomes & Benefits

After successfully completing the Jobs NOW training, Sandra was offered a work experience internship developed by DavidsonWorks at Daymark Recovery Services, a behavioral healthcare provider. At the worksite, Sandra quickly impressed her colleagues with her commitment, dedication and demonstrated skills. Sandra's abilities were so impressive that Daymark hired her as a permanent employee at the end of her internship. She now works as a Medical Office Assistant at Daymark in Winston Salem.
