Meet Michelle

Workforce Challenge

Michelle came to Build WorkSource for job search assistance and training after being laid off from her position as a personnel coordinator and bookkeeper at a national grocery chain. At the time of the layoff, she had been with the company for 16 years, moving through a number of roles before landing the job in bookkeeping. She wanted to find work in Accounting but did not have training in QuickBooks, which was holding her back from being hired.

Workforce Solution

Michelle qualified to receive assistance under the NEG Multi-Sector Partnership grant. She met with a counselor who reviewed her work history and skills, and they agreed that upgrading her accounting skills would help her be more marketable as a job seeker. Michelle was approved for training and enrolled in the Accounting Office Specialist Training Program at ICDC College.

Outcomes & Benefits

The in-depth course in computerized accounting trained Michelle in popular accounting and income tax preparation software and provided her with the skills needed to obtain employment soon after graduation. Michelle was hired as an Accounting Clerk with UFCW Local 770, a united food and commercial workers international union. She is currently working 40hrs a week earning almost $20 per hour. Michelle is happy that she decided to seek help and is very grateful for the assistance she has received from Build WorkSource. After almost two years of unsuccessful job search she said “I wish I had contacted the WorkSource sooner.”
