Meet Nancy

Workforce Challenge

Nancy was laid off in October 2012. Since she'd never had problems finding employment in the past, she began to look for work on her own, but after eight months of job searching she was very discouraged. Nancy went to the Yuba County 1-Stop for assistance. "Having never been in this position before, I did not know what I needed," said Nancy.

Workforce Solution

At the Yuba County 1-Stop, Nancy met with a Training Employment Counselor and was enrolled into the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program for job search assistance, with the option of obtaining training to upgrade her skills.

"I found the services at the Yuba County 1-Stop to be encouraging, which provided me with hope that I would find employment," she shared. Nancy's counselor showed her how many of her existing skills were transferable to current in-demand positions. She reviewed Nancy's resume and provided tips on how to upgrade it. Nancy attended the workshop “How to Get a State Job," which informed her about job opportunities with the state of California, and taught her how to navigate the State’s job website. "[My counselor] showed me how to look for and apply for positions for which I would never have thought [I would qualify]," said Nancy.

Outcomes & Benefits

Nancy went from having very few job opportunities to having a "wealth" of them. "Within a month, I was offered employment by the State of California," shared Nancy. "I currently work full time as a Program Technician. My job offers excellent benefits and the potential of upward mobility." Nancy encourages anyone searching for a job to visit the Yuba County 1-Stop to receive assistance from its knowledgeable and supportive staff.
