Meet Diane

Workforce Challenge

Diane was laid off from a large government health services contractor. She had worked there for over a decade as a Customer Account Representative. She had a degree in Accounting and at first she did not think that it would be difficult to find employment, but as time passed, she became more and more discouraged. Diane came to the Yuba County 1-Stop for assistance. The 1-Stop is governed by the North Central Counties Consortium (NCCC) and is a proud partner of America’s Job Center of California.

Workforce Solution

Diane was enrolled into the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program and began working with a Training Employment Counselor. She received assistance to update her résumé, develop better interview skills, and sharpening her job search techniques.

"I attended a “How to Get a State Job" workshop that my counselor Gail Manley taught," said Diane. "Gail showed me many employment opportunities with the State of California for which I was qualified. She also tutored me in how to navigate the State’s employment website, and the process of applying for exams and open positions." Diane took several exams, one being Account Trainee for the State of California.

Outcomes & Benefits

Within three months, Diane was offered a permanent full time position with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection as an Accountant Trainee. She had been laid off for over 3 years before becoming re-employed.

"In my first interview with my WIA counselor, she asked me why I had waited so long to seek assistance," said Diane. "I thought I could find new employment on my own, but I was wrong. I looked for employment for three years without finding a job, but with the help from WIA, I obtained employment within 3 months."
