Meet Charles

Workforce Challenge

Charles worked in a Civil Service position in remote Herlong, CA, performing maintenance and repair on specialized military vehicles and equipment before being laid off. The unique skills he learned were all acquired on the job; he did not have any formal training or credentials. After the layoff, with no other work available in Herlong, he relocated to Marysville and moved in with his mother.

Workforce Solution

Charles came to the Yuba County 1-Stop - part of the North Central Counties Consortium and a partner of America’s Job Center of California - to get information and advice on new career options, since there was no civilian equivalent for the job he'd been doing. Charles was assigned a counselor who helped him explore career options and become qualified for WIA assistance. Together, they identified that obtaining a commercial driver's license (CDL) would be a path to a new stable career.

"The WIA program paid for the cost of my training," said Charles. "It was the only way possible for me to afford it."

Outcomes & Benefits

Charles completed training and obtained his commercial driver's license, and the center staff helped him with his job search.

"Obtaining a commercial driver’s license has given me a new future to look forward to," said Charles. "I am now employed as a truck driver working 40+ hours a week at $15 an hour. Being new to the area, I did not know what to expect when I walked into the Yuba 1-Stop. All of the people I talked to were all very friendly and easy to work with, and they were able to give me the help I really needed."
