Meet Raul

Workforce Challenge

Raul was employed by a local manufacturer for 25 years but was laid off in January 2013. His two sons were also laid off at the same time from the same employer. Raul tried hard to find new employment, but wasn't even getting interviews, even though he'd applied for more than 40 jobs. Through a phone call, Raul learned that services from MCS Hollywood WorkSource center were available to help him get back to work.

Workforce Solution

Raul attended an information session in June 2013, and he brought his sons with him. Raul qualified to receive assistance through the NEG/Multi-Sector Workforce Partnership and began to explore his options. Although Raul was offered the opportunity to gain new skills through training, he chose to focus on using his current skills to get back to work as quickly as possible.

Staff at MCS/Hollywood WorkSource assisted Mr. Medina in putting together a stronger and more effective resume that highlighted his skills and abilities. The staff provided job leads from local employers that would be suitable for him. Raul asked for resources to help home owners behind on their mortgages and was directed to www.keepyourhomecalifornia.org.

Outcomes & Benefits

Raul followed the advice he was given and immediately applied to the job leads provided by the center. His new resume helped him get a few interviews, which boosted his confidence. He was waiting to hear back from an interview with Space X when he received an offer from Master Research in Norwalk. He began working there in January 2014 with a starting salary of $18.00 an hour. Two months later he received a job offer from Space X at a starting salary of $28.00 per hour, which he immediately accepted. After he completes probation period his pay will increase to $32.00 per hour. Raul was able to save his home and is now back working full time at a comparable wage.
