Meet Mariam

Workforce Challenge

Miriam was a child care provider for the City of Los Angeles, working as a teacher and teacher's assistant at Community Development Institute/Head Start and at the Center for Community and Family Services for 13 years prior to being laid off. She was on unemployment benefits and wanted to find a new job.

Workforce Solution

Mariam visited Metro North WorkSource Center, where she qualified for Multi-Sector Workforce Partnership funding to help her enroll in short-term certification classes. The certifications would help her reach her goal of opening her own preschool. She also attended workshops on resume writing, 'Balancing Work and Family', 'Marketing Yourself', 'Coping with Conflict', and 'Dressing for Success'. Her unemployment benefits ended in December 2013, and Mariam was not sure if she could make her dream of her own business become a reality.

Outcomes & Benefits

Metro North WorkSource paid for the cost of submitting applications and permitting fees to the City in order to open her own preschool. The process continued with City inspections and drawing up plans for the preschool. Mariam now operates her very own child care center and has received her first check from her first client for the child care services she has provided.
