Meet 'Michael'

Workforce Challenge

'Michael' was unemployed and his unemployed benefits expired in December 2013. He was getting anxious and was about to lose his home from not being able to pay rent. He had already lost his car and was behind in his rent 2 months. In addition, he was a single parent and was trying to hold on to custody of his two daughters.

Michael had just obtained his truck driver license through the NEG/Multi-Sector Workforce Partnership Grant and was looking for a truck driver position; however, due to his lack of experience as a truck driver, no companies would give him an opportunity. He was starting to lose hope.

Workforce Solution

Michael kept searching for a job and working with a business service representative (BSR) at Goodwill Metro North WorkSource Center. The BSR contacted CEMEX, a construction materials provider, which often had openings for truck drivers. The BSR visited the employer to discuss how the Metro North WorkSource Center could help with the company's staffing needs.

The Cemex representative emphasized to the BSR how important it was to find qualified candidates. After some discussion, they agreed that if the candidates had the training and ability needed to do the job, they would lower the work experience requirement.

Outcomes & Benefits

CEMEX and Goodwill Metro North Work Source discussed partnership, on the job training, and above all meeting the employer’s needs with qualified candidates to fill their current job openings. Metro North set up an interview with CEMEX for Michael. He was offered a position and started working full time in March 2014, earning $18 per hour plus benefits. Goodwill Metro North Work Source Center provided supportive services to assist Michael with transportation to the job and appropriate work attire.

Michael's custody of his daughters is secure and he is enjoying working hard at his new job.
