Workforce Challenge

James was employed for more than three years as a Customer Service Representative for a telecommunications company. After being laid off, he relied on Trade Adjustment Assistance funds, unemployment insurance, and SNAP to get him through the difficult times. He provided for himself and his mother and lived in week by week housing. This precarious financial situation meant he was at a high risk of becoming homeless.

Workforce Solution

At Greenville County Workforce Development, James completed his "Gold" level WorkKeys (work readiness credential) and received tuition assistance to enroll in Greenville Technical Community College to study Computer Technology.

Outcomes & Benefits

James earned an Associate Degree in Computer Technology / Applied Science and graduated with Honors. Following graduation, James completed a 12-week WIA Work Experience training in Greenville County’s Information Systems Dept. As a result of his outstanding performance and customer service skills, he was hired by Netlink, the county's contracted provider, and he is now working full time at Greenville County Information Systems. James now has benefits as well as a steady income, and he is preparing to secure an apartment for himself and his mother.
