Meet Robert

Workforce Challenge

Robert was an older aircraft worker who had been laid off. After nine months of unemployment, he was getting very depressed. Robert had a Bachelor’s of Science in Industrial/Construction Management but it was outdated. He job searched daily with no response from employers. He came to the Wichita workforce center for assistance.

Workforce Solution

Robert wanted to change his career path and use his current degree. He qualified for assistance under the Trade Adjustment Act (TAA) because of the decline in aerospace jobs in the state. Robert worked together with his TAA Case Manager and he was enrolled in the Program Management courses at Wichita State University's Center for Management Development (CMD) to update his current skills and make his degree more marketable.

Outcomes & Benefits

While in school, Robert updated his resume with the certificates he received in each CMD course and continued to search for a job. Robert obtained employment at a local construction company as a Quality Control Program Manager. The company accepted Robert knowing he was attending college courses and agreed to allow him to continue his education. Robert was also given a company truck, gas card and cell phone for work purposes. After 90 days, he became eligible for health and dental benefits, and he is now successfully back to work.
