Meet Jordan

Workforce Challenge

Jordan was paralyzed at an early age and confined to a wheelchair. In spite of his physical limitations, he was determined to become a welder and enrolled in the welding program at the North Dakota State School of Science (NDSCS). To be successful, Jordan needed to stand up to complete welding fabrication tasks. The welding instructors at NDSCS teamed up with Jordan to design a lift wheelchair which allowed him to stand up to complete the required tasks.

Workforce Solution

In addition to his welding education, Jordan needed work experience. He contacted the Job Service North Dakota Minot Office asking for assistance to locate a welding position during the summer. Staff secured summer employment for Jordan in 2009 and 2010 which he successfully completed.

Following a referral from the Job Service staff, Jordan also contacted and received assistance from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), a mandatory partner agency. The DVR funds were used to build a table which Jordan used to complete his welding tasks during the second summer employment opportunity.

Outcomes & Benefits

The workplace accommodation allowed Jordan to prove himself as a welder, and he is now employed as a welder at the business that provided his second summer employment opportunity.
