Meet Erin

Workforce Challenge

Erin was laid off in June 2011 from her position as a fourth grade teacher with the Long Beach Unified School District. The prospects for being rehired as a full time teacher in the district were very slim due to budget cuts.

Workforce Solution

The Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network contacted Erin and other teachers impacted by the layoff and invited them to consider training as special education teachers. This would offer an upgrade to their skills and a credential that would help them be more employable. Funding for the program, called the Special Education Cohort, was funded through the NEG Multisector Workforce Partnership Grant.

"Before my participation in the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network (PGWIN) Special Education Cohort I had little prospects of returning to work as a full-time teacher. Starting in July 2013, I began attending classes at California State University, Long Beach. I will receive my Education Specialist credential in May 2014. Currently there is an open market for Special Education Teachers and I am excited about my future as a teacher."

Outcomes & Benefits

Erin has already interviewed for an internship teaching position in Special Education at a local charter school through connections made as a member of the Special Education Cohort. "I believe this program will positively impact my future as I expect to return to full-time teaching very soon," shared Erin. "I am grateful for this program and appreciate the opportunities I know it will afford me."
