Meet Lewis

Workforce Challenge

Lewis was laid off from the Los Angeles Unified School District after working for over 5 years as a facilities attendant. He started to collect his EDD benefits, and eventually exhausted them after almost a year and a half. His resume now showed a significant employment gap, and the resumes he was sending out received no response.

Workforce Solution

The Van Nuys WorkSource Center enrolled Lewis into the NEG-funded LA Back 2 Work Program in September 2013. After an assessment and discussion of his needs, Lewis decided he would like to pursue a job in the security field.

Lewis researched security training sites, and then requested assistance with obtaining credentials including a Guard Card, tear gas and pepper spray training, 'Powers to Arrest' and 'Arrest Techniques' training, baton training, and CPR certification.

With these certifications, Lewis would be able to make more than $10.00 per hour, and he wanted to eventually be considered for hire in a supervisory position.

Outcomes & Benefits

With funding from the LA Back 2 Work program, Lewis enrolled in the Firearms Academy in Montebello, CA to get the necessary training to obtain these certificates. Within two weeks of completing these courses, he was hired as a campus security officer at Birmingham Charter School and is earning $15.00/hour. He has relocated to to the San Fernando Valley area from Los Angeles to be closer to his new job.
