Meet Kira

Workforce Challenge

Kira was 17 years old and homeless. She had no parental support and was living off-and-on with friends as well as her ex-boyfriend, doing what little she could to earn her keep. Though she had attempted to take the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) several times, she repeatedly had difficulty passing the math section of the test, and without her high school diploma, her future was unclear.

Workforce Solution

Kira was referred to Youth Networked Services (YNS) at PathPoint, a service provider under contract with the Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County. YNS coordinated ten hours of private tutoring with a credentialed teacher that focused on addressing the problems she had consistently met when taking the math portion of the CAHSEE. After taking dutiful notes, working hard, and completing her tutoring, Kira took the CAHSEE and passed it on her very first attempt. However, the YNS did more than just strengthen her test taking skills. It also provided Kira with the opportunity to participate in a paid internship at the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Paula and taught her how to properly manage her internship paychecks through a Life Skills Workshop.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kira now has a steady income and a steady housing situation as well. Living with her grandfather, she contributes what she can to the household bills while putting money away in a savings account so that she might continue to support herself after her internship has ended. With her high school degree now firmly in hand, she looks confidently to the future with plans of attending Ventura College while working part-time.
