Meet Katherine

Workforce Challenge

Katherine was on a very difficult path. A high school dropout lacking any work experience, Katherine also had a one and half year old child to look after and care for. In order to provide for herself and her child, Katherine needed help to finish high school and gain some job skills.

Workforce Solution

Katherine enrolled in the Youth Networked Services (YNS) program at Workforce Investment Board provider Pathpoint. The youth specialist assisted Katherine in enrolling in the high school diploma program at Ventura Adult and Continuing Education (VACE) and provided her with incentives for academic progress in completing her high school credits. Over a span of a year and a half, Katherine completed her high school credits and obtained her high school diploma. To combat her inexperience in the workforce, Katherine also completed the YNS Work Readiness and Career Planning Workshops as well as an unpaid internship at Old Navy.

Outcomes & Benefits

Katherine is now working part-time in the Olive Beauty Salon in Camarillo – her very first paid employment position. She continues to participate in the Job and Career Center job club and plans to enroll in classes at Ventura College in the fall of 2013 to study business and accounting.
