Meet Amado

Workforce Challenge

Amado was laid off from his job as a calibration technician for an aerospace manufacturer in May 2013. Although he diligently searched for work, he quickly realized that most employers required certification in CNC Machining in addition to solid work experience. At the El Proyecto Workforce Center, Amado asked for assistance in obtaining certification as Light Manufacturing CNC Operator.

Workforce Solution

Amado qualified for assistance from the Back to Work program, which is funded by an NEG grant. His case manager felt he would be more employable after being certified in CNC Machining. Amado attended a six-week course at Los Angeles Valley College to obtain certification. In addition, Amado attended a job readiness workshop once per week. Amado graduated from Los Angeles Valley College and received his certificate of completion as a CNC Operator at the end of June. To further increase his skills, Amado requested and was approved for a short-term training course in Solid Works (an AUTO CAD program) which he started in July 2013.

Throughout training Amado received the transportation support he needed to complete training and to keep appointments for interviews with prospective employers.

Outcomes & Benefits

In August, Amado was offered a full-time position as a Calibration Coordinator with Ensign Brickford Aerospace and Defense, making around $19 per hour. Since then, Amado also completed AUTOCAD training and is enjoying his new job.
