Meet Kenneth

Workforce Challenge

Kenneth was employed by the City of Inglewood. He worked as a tree trimmer but was laid off after a year. However, he was lucky enough to be re-hired as a maintenance worker, where he was employed for two years before additional cutbacks meant another layoff. Kenneth had three young children and a fiance to support, so finding a new, stable job quickly was very important. Unemployment benefits did not go very far with a family of five.

Workforce Solution

Kenneth came to the Los Angeles Urban League WorkSource Job Center to inquire about employment opportunities. He attended orientation and learned that he qualified for the getting “LA Back 2 Work program”, funded by the NEG multisector partnership grant. His career advisor suggested that Kenneth consider training to increase his chances of employment, but Kenneth was anxious to find work right away. His resume was very outdated, so the career advisor referred Kenneth to a business services representative to obtain help with updating his resume to be more marketable. The business services rep took time to redo Mr. Norris resume and began sending it out to a few employers.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kenneth had several interviews with companies including AEG. In December 2013, he was offered a full time position as a Carpenter Helper with Partners in Diversity. He started his new job in January, 2014. Congratulations, Kenneth!
