Meet Larry

Workforce Challenge

Larry is a military veteran who served seven years in the Army after the first Gulf war. Larry wanted to obtain training in a field that would provide more advancement and opportunity for income growth.

Workforce Solution

In June 2013, Cortez Workforce Center staff helped Larry enroll in the Colorado Enhanced Approved Training Program (CEATP) program to attend San Juan College's program in gas compression. However, he needed assistance with the tuition. Fortunately, he qualified to enroll in the Veterans Workforce Investment Program (VWIP) for the additional support. Staff wrote a letter of recommendation to the school as there is limited enrollment space for the gas compression course. Larry had to take a placement test to make sure his skills and aptitudes were suitable for the course.

Outcomes & Benefits

Larry scored high enough on the Accuplacer test to be one of the 12 students selected for the class. The additional VWIP funding Larry received allowed him to attend and successfully complete the classes. Larry is now working in an internship with BP and is on his way to a new career.
