Workforce Challenge

Lisa grew up in the small town of Andale, Kansas. She started attending Hutchinson Community College (HCC) in 2007 right after graduation from high school, but left during her second semester. However, she did continue to work. She managed to complete her certification requirements to be a CNA and she was able to find a job in the medical field, like she had always dreamed of doing.

Workforce Solution

In 2011, Lisa completed the pre-requisites to become an LPN, and she enrolled in HCC's program in May 2012. In that same month, she also lost her job and found out she was pregnant with her second child. "I couldn’t imagine that I would have to give up this opportunity because of not being able to support myself and my children," said Lisa. "After some researching I learned about the WIA program. I completed the process and I hoped. When I was notified I had been accepted for assistance, I couldn’t have been more thankful." Lisa was able to continue with her plans to obtain her LPN.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lisa graduated in December 2013. "I can say I am finally a nurse," said Lisa. "Without the help and encouragement of [my counselors] ensuring that I get the entire aid I needed, I may not have been as successful completing this program during those 18 months." Lisa is grateful for the assistance received and excited about her new job as a nurse.
