Workforce Challenge

Rob lost his job and was out of work for three months. He had no computer at home and was going to the local library to look for work and submit online applications. However, the library limited the length of time he could use their computers. He heard about the Pikes Peak Workforce Center (PPWFC) on KRCC (the local NPR station), through the workforce center’s weekly announcements about its services for job seekers.

Workforce Solution

Rob realized he could get more computer time by using the Resource Room at the Workforce Center. Although he was submitting lots of applications, he was getting no response. Rob felt he was overqualified and his computer skills were lacking. He also knew that the hiring process moves at a “snail’s pace” due to Colorado Springs’ high unemployment rate. He used the PPWFC Educational Services labs to enhance his computer skills. Rob felt supported because “the center staff placed no judgments” on anyone looking for work. Without the ability to use the PPWFC Resource Room computers to apply for work online and to use the labs to enhance his computer skills, Rob thinks his job search would have taken much longer.

Outcomes & Benefits

After submitting 90 applications and with encouragement and guidance offered by the PPWFC staff, Rob landed a position at Emeritus Assisted Living as a Senior Care Giver for elders. Although this is a part-time position, Rob is optimistic that more good things will come his way. He is outgoing and excited about helping others and recommends that job seekers be persistent in their job search and take advantage of the services the workforce center offers.
