Meet Maricelia

Workforce Challenge

Maricelia was employed as an Adult Education Teacher, but was laid off from LAUSD in June 2013 after seven years of service. She applied for employment with various charter schools and at Costco, trying to find employment so that she could continue to take care of her five children as a single parent. Even with a Master’s Degree in Education and her Adult Education Credential, she realized that she was not qualified for any open teaching positions without a single subject teaching credential.

Workforce Solution

In August 2013, Maricelia came into the Housing Authority WorkSource Portal – Imperial Courts and enrolled into the Getting Back to Work – NEG Program, in hopes of obtaining assistance with getting a single subject credential that would help her become reemployed. Maricelia found an online program that fit her needs and enrolled right away.

Outcomes & Benefits

Maricelia referred three of her LAUSD colleagues to the program, and they are now all enrolled and obtaining their single subject credentials. Although she is still completing her program, Maricelia was hired by Fullerton Community College and is teaching one class part-time.
