Meet Henry

Workforce Challenge

Henry had worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for four years, but it felt like a roller coaster experience. With budget cuts, there was a lot of uncertainty. He was laid off, put on the substitute teaching roster, and then rehired several times. "Why do I have to go through this ordeal every year?" thought Henry.

Workforce Solution

When Henry was offered the chance to add a second single-subject credential to his existing credential, he was optimistic. He had a higher chance of landing a teaching job as an English teacher than as a Math teacher and an additional credential could lead to a more stable position. Henry was unfamiliar with the services offered by LA Works, a Career OneStop Center, but he met with a case manager and learned about all the resources available to him, such as resume building and career enhancement workshops. I was hopeful that LA Works would help me find a teaching job or if I was desperate, LA Works could help me pursue a different career. With help from the MultiSector Workforce Partnership Grant, Henry enrolled in a training program to earn an additional teaching credential.

Outcomes & Benefits

"Over a year ago, I was frustrated and hopeless of finding a stable, teaching job." shared Henry. "Now, [I've been] teaching English, my favorite subject, at a wonderful charter school in Orange County for over a year." Henry is grateful to LA Works and to his case manager, Leena Rai. "I am glad that I seized the opportunity and left LA Works with a carefree heart, a positive experience, and a steady income," said Henry.
