Meet Andrew

Workforce Challenge

Andrew worked as a customer service representative in the financial services industry before he was laid off in May 2012 as the result of a closure. Like many dislocated workers, he tried for several months on his own to look for a job and was unsuccessful. His only income was his unemployment benefits.

Workforce Solution

Though the outreach efforts of the Concord One-Stop Career Center, Andrew learned about the MultiSector Workforce Partnership Grant and the availability of training funds to help learn new job skills and get back to work. He received an orientation in January 2012, and in February, the WIA Program provided him with a short-term specialized training through the Loss Prevention Group to becoming certified as a security guard. He also received supportive services to help with transportation and wardrobe expenses. Through his coursework, he completed units in the following areas: Baton; Power to Arrest; Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism; Firearms; Infant, Child, Adult CPR; AED & First Aid; Practical & Tactical Handcuffing (PATH), and Chemical Agents.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shortly after receiving his Guard Card, Andrew was offered a position with Securitas Security Services and has been employed since April 2013. Andrew stated, “I’m thankful that the WIA program paid for my training and the supportive services were also helpful. I was able to get my Guard Card and get a job.”
