Meet Serena

Workforce Challenge

Serena was employed as Childcare Associate II for the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation for 14 years. In July 2010 her position was eliminated due to budget cuts. She filed for unemployment, but with the struggling economy, poor job market and unemployment rates increase, Serena eventually exhausted her unemployment benefits.

Workforce Solution

After a two-year job search, Serena contacted Los Angeles Urban League WorkSource Center for assistance with finding a job. Serena attended Los Angeles Urban League WorkSource Center orientation in July 2013 where she learned more about the “Getting LA Back 2 Work” program, funded through the Multisector workforce partnership grant. Serena was able to complete her core services, take an assessment test, meet with a case manager one-on-one to explore training options and talk about labor market regarding Certified Nursing Assistant.

Outcomes & Benefits

Serena enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant program which she completed in September, 2013. In October, she will take her certification test and be ready to work. The Los Angeles Urban League WorkSource Center looks forward to placing Serena in successful employment.
