Meet Michael

Workforce Challenge

Michael Samay had experience in construction, but this industry was in decline in his area. Michael came to the Sutter County One Stop looking for new and different career opportunities. He had heard about a special Water Treatment Operations grant and he was very interested in obtaining his waste water treatment certification. Michael was a perfect match for this training. He began the training right away, moving through the material quickly and completing the course in 4 months.

Workforce Solution

Unfortunately, completing the course was not enough to get Michael a job; he could not work as a waste water operator without an Operator in Training (OIT) Certificate, and to get the OIT certificate he had to have a year’s worth of hands-on experience at a waste water plant. Using money from the grant, Sutter County One Stop placed Michael in a Work Experience opportunity at the City of Yuba City Wastewater Treatment Facility. Michael’s wages were paid by the grant while the city did the training, and Michael got the experience he needed. The grant funding ended before Michael could get his year’s worth of hands on experience. However, the city was impressed with Michael and was able to keep him on a temporary basis until he completed all his hours.

Outcomes & Benefits

Michael finished the time required for the OIT in August 2013, and he is currently in the process of obtaining his state certification, the last requirement to be employed as a waste water operator. Congratulations, Michael!
