Meet Douglas

Workforce Challenge

Douglas came into the Workforce Investment Act Program (WIA) in October 2012 after being laid off his job as a pipe fitter/millwright.

At the age of 57 his confidence was shaken, knowing he did not have his HS Diploma. Even though he had work experience, without his GED he would be very unlikely to obtain employment. His wife was working, and took full responsibility for providing the income while he was laid off. This was both a challenge and a sacrifice for their family.

Workforce Solution

Douglas enrolled in WIA to obtain his high school equivalency diploma and to obtain additional training as a heating and air conditioning technician. With much hard work and commitment, he completed his GED exam and WorkKeys®, and began his HVAC training in March 2013 with L&S Institute. Along with his training, he participated in a Work Experience at Dipple Plumbing.

Outcomes & Benefits

Douglas completed his training in June 2013, where he obtained the highest score on his EPA exam. After graduation, he immediately began his new job as the Maintenance Technician for Laurel Woods Apartments, a job that uses all his skills. Douglas' instructor from L&S Technical says Doug was extremely motivated to achieve his goals from his GED to his HVAC certification. Douglas said, "It’s never too late to learn, grow and achieve. I was hungry for this opportunity & I'm forever grateful! Big High Five!"
