Meet Ariana

Workforce Challenge

While in high school Ariana became pregnant and found herself homeless after sharing this news with her parents. Ariana took a part time job while finishing up high school but at the age of 18 was pregnant and alone. Ariana could not commit to furthering her education until her son was in school full time as she could not afford child care. She eventually started attending CSU Dominguez Hills full time while working various part time positions. She graduated with a BA in Business Admin/Accounting. One of her part time positions was with the Census Bureau, but this job ended, and Ariana was not working full time.

Workforce Solution

Ariana received a mailer from EDD for former census workers who were interested in customized training, career counseling and job referrals. Ariana contacted the Central San Gabriel Valley WSC and set up an intake appointment with the NEG program in July 2012. Through the NEG grant, Ariana choose to attend CSU Long Beach for the Basic Applied Forensic Science and Crime Analysis Class. She completed training in December, 2012.

Outcomes & Benefits

Ariana is currently employed with the Los Angeles County Probation Department as a Clerk and she and her son live with her uncle. Ariana recently applied for a Probation Officer position and has received notification that she will be hired pending background clearance. Once hired, Ariana will be making $23.00 per hour.

Ultimately Ariana hopes to become a Los Angeles County Deputy for the Sheriffs Department once budgets stabilize and they begin hiring again. Through it all Ariana has never given up on her education. She hopes her son will learn from her and be able to realize the importance of education.
