Workforce Challenge

Terri was laid off from her job as a laborer at a manufacturing facility in NW Kansas. She had worked there on and off for 13 years. She had other skills that were hard labor skills, but with getting older, the hard physical labor was getting to be too much. Terri never thought she could go back to school because she already had a degree and she didn't want to accumulate any more student loan debt.

Workforce Solution

Kansas WorkforceOne held a Rapid Response at Terri's company, and met with several individuals including Terri. Terri's interview and assessments told the workforce staff that Terri was a person who was passionate about taking care of others. Terri started classes as to obtain certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) and then progressed to get her LPN.

Outcomes & Benefits

Terri completed the LPN program with a 3.61 GPA. She drove 110 miles round trip every day to attend school. Terri went from doing a laborer job every day to being an LPN, and she is making a self sufficient wage. Terri is currently working nights but will moving to days very soon. She is happy with her new career and reports that she will work for a year before trying to go back and get her license as a registered nurse (RN).
