Meet Mandy

Workforce Challenge

Mandy initially came to Chinatown Service Center in February 2013, after being unemployed for the last 3 years. Her last employer was the U.S. Census Bureau, where she served as an enumerator for the 2010 Census. Once her assignment with the U.S. Census Bureau ended, Mandy’s only source of income was through Unemployment Insurance benefits. Mandy searched for a job; however, she was unsuccessful in finding full time employment due to her limited skills and employment history.

Workforce Solution

Mandy decided to seek assistance from Chinatown Service Center. Once Mandy attended orientation there she was informed of funding available through the National Emergency Grant for former U.S Census Bureau employees. Because of her long period of unemployment, Mandy needed training and intensive services to help her get back on her feet. After further exploration, her Workforce Specialist realized Mandy needed to learn new skills through vocational skills training in order to be employable. Mandy the researched industries and decided to pursue a career in the medical field.

Outcomes & Benefits

In June 2013, Mandy started training as a Medical Clinical Assistant, and is scheduled to complete the course in January, 2014. With her new skillset, Mandy will be able to secure full time employment. Once established in the workforce, Mandy wants to pursue further education in the health care industry.
