Meet Maria

Workforce Challenge

Maria was laid off from her job as a parent educator with LA Unified School District in June 2012. After her layoff she became extremely worried about her unemployment status. Her only income was unemployment and she was facing financial difficulty. Maria has a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Chemical Engineering from Mexico and an Associates degree in Child Development, but was unable to find a new job.

Workforce Solution

During this time, Maria came in contact with Goodwill/Metro North WorkSource Center who assisted her with intensive services such as case management, developing an individual employment plan for her, providing supportive services and training services. Maria was enrolled in the Getting LA Back to Work Program in April 2013. Her goal was to find employment and to improve her computer skills. Maria began working with a Career Advisor who created an individual employment plan for her focusing on both her employment and educational goals. Business Service Representative, Jose Loera assisted Maria with job development and job search assistance.

Outcomes & Benefits

Maria received a job referral to the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF). As a result of this referral, Maria was interviewed for the position of Child Care Worker. Maria received an offer for the full time position of childcare worker at a rate of $14.40 an hour and began working again. Maria was also provided with training services through Los Angeles Valley College for the Microsoft Academy course to upgrade her computer skills, and she is presently attending her training course while working full time.
