Meet Ashton

Workforce Challenge

Ashton came into the Wichita Workforce Center to apply for the Kansas Health Profession Opportunity Project (KHPOP) program, as she was interested in completing her RN degree/license. Ashton was already employed part-time, working as a lab tech/phlebotomist as well as attending Bethel College in the RN program. She was in need of financial assistance to be able to complete her core RN classes due to limited financial aid assistance and lack of full-time employment.

Workforce Solution

Ashton was approved for the KHPOP program in May 2012 and completed the required next steps to be referred to training services. KHPOP funding helped her enroll for the Fall 2012 semester. While in the KHPOP program, Ashton received assistance with tuition, fees, books, uniforms and RN testing fees as well as a background check associated with RN licensing requirements. Ashton also received fuel assistance to get to and from class, as Bethel College was a significant drive from her home. Ashton completed her RN degree and obtained her RN state license in May 2013.

Outcomes & Benefits

Ashton began working as an RN in June 2013. She remains at her previous healthcare employer; however she was transitioned to an RN position, making almost $20 per hour. She is working full-time hours and receiving health benefits. The KHPOP program helped her complete her degree/license and find work in a stable industry to enhance her future.
