Meet Chardae

Workforce Challenge

Growing up, Chardae was raised by her grandmother because her brother and other relatives were in and out of prison. Before graduating from high school, Chardae had to act as her grandmother’s caregiver. After graduating, she continued to care for her grandmother, with no other goals in mind.

Workforce Solution

Eventually, Chardae decided she would like to be a certified nursing assistant. She looked into many programs but ultimately decided upon the County of San Bernardino Workforce Investment Board’s training program at the Career Institute. She applied, secured an interview, and rode three hours on a bus to make her interview on time.

After Chardae’s acceptance into the program, she met with a program mentor every week while completing her coursework. She was also gaining life-skills training, including time and financial management.

“Many of the things I learned at the Career Institute have created a foundation for me to move forward towards self-sufficiency,” Chardae said.

Outcomes & Benefits

Chardae is now working full time as a certified nursing assistant and has saved up enough money to buy a car. She has even secured her own apartment. Not only has the program changed her life, but it has impacted the life of her brother who had been in prison. Released two days before Chardae’s certified nursing assistant graduation, he watched Chardae graduate. This motivated Chardae’s brother to obtain his driver’s license, and he was recently hired by UPS.

“The most surprising thing I have learned about myself is how much perseverance I have. I feel like I can do anything now,” shares Chardae. “I am excited to continue my education, advance my career and motivate those around me to do the same. Thank you to the Workforce Investment Board and Career Institute for this opportunity.”
